The Petaluma River runs right through downtown, and the city has a long flood history. A local wetlands group's summary of the city's floodplain plan lists significant floods in 1982, 1983, 1986, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2005 (Petaluma Wetlands Alliance).
What the city has done
The City of Petaluma lists flood projects including Payran Reach (river widening and floodwalls), Denman Reach to reduce flooding on Industrial Avenue, and Capri Creek east of North McDowell Boulevard. In 2023 it updated its flood modeling to account for sea-level rise (City of Petaluma).
What it means for your home
Projects reduce risk; they don't eliminate it. Check your address on the city's maps and FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, and remember that homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding. Inside the house, plumbing and appliance leaks are still the most common cause of water damage.
